The Astronomer is a medium size oil painting on canvas. The dominant blue color gives the painting a nighttime atmosphere. The stars and the headlight add to our awareness of the time of day. Contrasting with the blue is the reddish orange of the brick houses. Between them we see the astronomer in the foreground with his telescope. A window in the lower left reveals a clock telling us that it is 10:25 p.m.

The astronomer, himself, is illuminated by a symbolic light from above. This is a surreal painting. It reveals how we experience things as well as how they look. How we feel about a subject as well as how it appears. A nearby church has stained glass windows. The sign reminds us that we are in a neighborhood of family homes.
